What new credit card privacy rules mean for you

California is in the news once again for bringing in a controversial new law. This one pertains to privacy and credit card usage.  The State Supreme Court recently ruled that retailers were no longer legally  able to ask for zip codes when purchasers were buying items with their credit cards.

The blog Prism Money writes: “The case, Pineda vs. Williams-Sonoma, was sparked when the plaintiff gave her zip code during checkout and soon found herself on marketing lists. What often happens is that retailers store this information for marketing purposes. “Consumers are blessedly unaware,” says Curtis Arnold, founder of a credit card site . “Even I, as an expert, didn’t know what was going on behind the scenes for a long time.”
